Premiere screenings at Karlovy Vary of "Brothers" and "Breathing into Marble", presented as projects in SOFIA MEETINGS' programmes

Today at Karlovy Vary premieres Ömür Atay's debut "Brothers", produced by Atayfilm, Offilm and Fiction 2.0 - Stefan Gieren. This story was presented as project and as "works in progress" in SOFIA MEETINGS' programmes and found its Bulgarian producers - "Chouchkov Brothers". This year the film will compete for the prestigious Crystal Globe for Best Feature Film in 53rd edition of Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Seventeen-year-old Yusuf comes home after spending four years at a detention center. His return to the family circle freshly recalls the act that his loved ones, bound by rigid tradition, forced Yusuf to commit. Directed with an assured hand, this intimate debut concerns guilt and punishment and how difficult it is to choose between blood ties and tradition on the one hand, and what is morally right on the other...

Tomorrow is the premiere screening of another film, presented as project at SOFIA MEETINGS - "Breathing into Marble", directed by Giedrė Beinoriūtė. Her debut feature will participate in "East of the West" competition programme. The film tells a story of a middle-class couple, living in their rural house with their son Gailius, who suffers from epilepsy. They decide to adopt six-year-old Ilja, a headstrong yet withdrawn little boy from a children’s home. With the arrival of the new addition, family life starts to change drastically for all of them… This taut psychological drama by debuting filmmaker Giedrė Beinoriūtė is an adaptation of the award-winning novel of the same name by Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė.

We wish success to all the films, presented as projects at SOFIA MEETINGS, in Main Competition and "East of the West" programme at Karlovy Vary 2018!
