ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND CINEMA: NAVIGATING OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS IN THE FILM INDUSTRY

The Creative Europe MEDIA Programme Office in Bulgaria is organizing TWO events within the framework of Sofia Meetings, together with the French Institute of Bulgaria and Media Research Hub - a platform for media and consumer research

I. TALK: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND CINEMA: NAVIGATING OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS IN THE FILM INDUSTRY

Generative AI is making its way into the cultural and artistic industries, becoming an unavoidable part of how films are conceived, developed, and even distributed. While its presence opens up new avenues for efficiency and experimentation, it also raises profound questions about its
implications for creators and the industry as a whole.
We will explore how generative AI enhances the creative process by offering innovative tools for storytelling, visual effects, and pre-visualization, thus fostering a more unified and efficient production pipeline. This technology serves as a powerful asset for filmmakers, writers, designers, and producers, enabling them to push the boundaries of imagination and collaboration.
However, alongside these opportunities, there are significant risks and thical considerations that must be addressed. Issues such as intellectual property rights, the authenticity of human creativity, and the potential for AI-generated content to overshadow traditional artistic contributions will be examined. We will discuss the importance of establishing clear guidelines and safeguards to ensure that the use of generative AI respects the rights of creators and maintains the integrity of artistic expression.
To provide concrete insights, we will showcase specific examples where generative AI has been used to support film directors and their teams in developing original projects. These case studies will illustrate the practical applications of the technology and offer a glimpse into the future of filmmaking.
Join us for an engaging discussion on how generative AI is shaping the future of cinema, and discover how to harness its potential while navigating the complexities it brings to the creative landscape

II. INTERACTIVE DEMONSTRATIONS & WORKSHOP:

Include live demonstrations of generative AI tools used in filmmaking, such as scriptwriting software, AI-based visual effects generators, or AI-assisted editing tools. This can give the audience a tangible understanding of the technology.
The workshop will ensure participants can experiment with generative AI tools, allowing them to experience firsthand the opportunities and challenges involved.
NB. Participants will need their own laptops to fully engage with the tools!
